It seems to me that it's very difficult for modern comedians to play the humorous idiot. (Or conversely, modern idiots like Penn playing classic comedians like Larry) There's always the "Aren't I brilliantly playing the idiot!" thing slipping from behind the mask.
The 3 Stooges/Laurel and Hardy and a very few others could make you believe (and laugh a lot harder) because they had a rock hard professionalism, likely borne of playing the stage during the depression.
And it's not even the same thing as remaking an older film. The Stooges were a one-of-a-kind event.
This turkey be the remake of 'Beverly Hillbillies' all over again, whoever takes the roles. And they're dreaming if they think Johnny Depp would go within a mile of this in the first place.
